Home Windows 7 to Windows 10 Migration

Enterprises are accelerating their efforts to implement digital workplaces that enable new and more powerful ways to work, anywhere, any time, on any device. There is a tremendous opportunity for business application transformation with Windows 10, Mobile applications for sales, field operations. With the objective to application transformation, especially if they are tied to new capabilities such as the Internet of Things, exploit a CRM toolset that adapts to corporate tablets, shared phones, and other devices to display only required information in the right format—reducing wasted time for non-technical teams while enhancing user productivity, Windows 10 is the right choice.

Windows 10 is a common-core operating system that provides a single, consistent user experience across devices from phones, tablets to laptops, PCs and Internet-of-Things devices. This single user experience, combined with careful planning for new feature integration, makes Windows 10 very intuitive to use. Users can start to quickly leverage their business applications across their various devices, including PCs, tablets and phones, in a highly innovative and productive way.

Windows 10 is a new platform with the features and capabilities that more fully enable a high-performance digital workplace to:

Increase workforce productivity

  • Windows 10 integrates readily with digital workplace technologies such as Office 365, Azure and mobile
  • Employees can use these technologies more easily and you can adopt more of these technologies more quickly in a cost-effective manner

Achieve more security

  • Users can take advantage of significant security enhancements to protect their environment while making self-service a reality with easier-to-deploy options such as the Windows Store for Business, BitLocker to allow user self-service and integrated mobile device management.
  • Windows to Go is a core capability of Windows 10 when it is deployed on the drive and is configured following the guidance for the applicable security certification.
  • Solutions built using Windows To Go can be submitted for additional certifications that cover specific hardware environment. While the hybrid cloud/on-premises nature of Windows 10 provides seamless integration.
  • The new OS also takes care security seriously as providing a more secure workplace was a key design goal for Windows 10. New Device Guard and SecureBoot technologies provide a new level of protection for your devices.

Self Service options

  • Migration to Windows 10 will create opportunity to make self-service a reality with new options such as the Windows Store for Business, especially if user is planning to deploy applications to mobile devices.
  • In this deployment strategy, it is essential to consider technologies that are closely integrated, such as OneDrive for Business and Enterprise Mobility Suite, especially if one is going to leverage cloud products such as Office 365, Enterprise Mobility Suite. That will secure data and devices while empowering users to leverage a broader set of devices.

Provide better employee engagement

  • Just one experience across devices makes for faster and easier end-user adoption.

Workplace infrastructure and easier adoption

  • Organizations need to consider which business or IT areas can benefit that Windows 10 provides.
  • The first step on this journey for the organizations should be reviewing traditionally challenging areas such as  self-service and application/service deployment, considering which user groups could benefit, and evaluating the required infrastructure and business processes.
  • Additionally, consider current and future device plans, users’ data, and how those should inter-operate beginning with careful worker segmentation and a clear understanding of key business drivers.

Our Migration Process Framework

We have specialised team to migrate Windows 7 platform to Windows 10 platform. The core components of the process are classification of applications, files, and settings. We examine root causes of IT difficulties in solving business problems, not just symptoms.

We are using our framework in the migration process setting the customer target operating model and operating model variants as follows:

With the increasing attention given to improving business performance and the value and influence of IT, we offer truly productive solutions. We preserving those Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF) Foundation Principlesthat do provide valueto compensate forsome of the disadvantages imposed by the top-down, hierarchical structure of traditional. MSF assumes that things are continually changing and that it is impossible to isolate anIT solution delivery project from these changes. Our migration process along with the Work packages are aligned to ITIL process and other variants as follows:

Major Components of consideration

We consider the following components while migrating Windows 7 platform to Windows 10 platform. We useUser State Migration Tool (USMT) 10.0 for large-scale automated deployments. For deployment to a small number of computers or for individually customized deployments, we can use Windows Easy Transfer.

USMT uses configurable migration rule (.xml) files to control exactly which user accounts, user files, operating system settings, and application settings are migrated and how they are migrated. We use USMT for both side-by-side migrations, where one piece of hardware is being replaced, or wipe-and-load (or refresh) migrations, when only the operating system is being upgraded.

  • Application compatibility

We analyse the applications and the configurations using tools to generate repositories of the impacted components and upgrade those to the Windows 10 environment accordingly.

We analyse the applications and the configurations using tools to generate repositories of the impacted components and upgrade those to the Windows 10 environment accordingly.

  • Multilingual Windows image upgrades

When performing multilingual Windows upgrades, cross-language upgrades are not supported by User State Migration tool (USMT). If you are upgrading or migrating an operating system with multiple language packs installed, you can upgrade or migrate only to the system default user interface (UI) language. In this this scenario, all of the language packs will be removed and we have to reinstall those after the upgrade is completed.

  • Setting the Error Handler

We set the error handler (Errorhandler.cmd) in the appropriate path and monitor the information captured in it during the migration process.

  • ACL migration

During the configuration pass of Windows Setup, the root access control list (ACL) on drives formatted for NTFS that do not appear to have an operating system will be changed to the default Windows XP ACL format. The ACLs on these drives are changed to enable authenticated users to modify access on folders and files.

Changing the ACLs may affect the performance of Windows Setup if the default Windows XP ACLs are applied to a partition with a large amount of data.
